What we help with

Ten-minute problems that nobody has ten minutes for.

These are the questions older adults and their families ask us most. Each one has a concrete answer if someone takes the time to look it up. We take the time.

Insurance and benefits

The most common reason people reach out.

  • "Does Medicare cover this?" answered from the actual rule, with the cost.
  • Original Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage vs. Medicaid: what you have and what each card is for.
  • Free one-on-one counseling from your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), with the local number.
  • What to do when coverage is ending, enrollment mail was missed, or a premium changed without explanation.

Help at home

Bathing, cooking, medication reminders, companionship.

  • Your local Area Agency on Aging and what it offers.
  • Medicaid home and community-based waiver programs in your state, and how to apply.
  • Programs that pay a family member to be a caregiver, where they exist.
  • Home care agencies in your zip code. Medicare generally does not pay for non-medical home care, and we'll say so plainly.

Wheelchairs, lift chairs, and medical equipment

Your doctor ordered it. Now what?

  • What Medicare covers for your specific item (for a lift chair, the lifting mechanism, not the chair).
  • The closest Medicare-approved suppliers.
  • State assistive technology programs and equipment lending libraries for the part Medicare won't pay.
  • Where paperwork goes when a doctor "filed it somewhere."

Finding a doctor or specialist

Who takes your insurance and is actually accepting patients.

  • Specialists near you who accept Medicare, with names, addresses, and phone numbers.
  • Whether a referral is needed under your plan.
  • A second and third option ready in case the first office is booked.
  • Help when you've moved and need a new primary care doctor.

Rides to appointments

The barrier that blocks everything else.

  • Medicaid non-emergency medical transportation, if you're eligible, and the broker's number.
  • County paratransit and how to register.
  • Volunteer driver programs in rural areas.
  • Options for early-morning dialysis and recurring treatment schedules.

Bills and paperwork

When the numbers don't make sense.

  • What an Explanation of Benefits actually says.
  • How to question a charge and who to call first.
  • Hospital financial assistance (charity care) programs and how to apply.
  • Manufacturer copay cards and patient assistance programs for expensive medications.

What GrandLine doesn't do

  • Medical advice. We won't tell you whether a symptom is serious or which treatment to choose. That's a conversation for your doctor.
  • Emergencies. If you or someone near you is in danger, call 911.
  • Selling insurance. We don't sell plans and we don't take payment from the providers or programs we point you to.
